Research & Surveys

The League regularly collects information on municipal salaries and employee fringe benefits, annually produces a forecast of the coming budget year’s local revenues, and conducts a variety of other surveys.

Revenue Forecasts

The League annually provides information that cities and towns can use in estimating certain revenues for the upcoming fiscal year, including local government sales and use taxes, the sales tax on piped natural gas and electricity, and beer and wine revenues. Information includes background, factors to consider in making individual estimates, and estimated revenue growth for both the current and coming fiscal years.

The League also provides quarterly “Revenue Reports,” which serve as updates on local revenue data. These reports are intended to be interim looks at local revenues between the League’s more extensive annual revenue forecasts.

Salary & Fringe Benefits Surveys

The League annually collects information on salaries of municipal employees, and bi-annually collects information on fringe benefits municipalities provide to their employees.

The results of these surveys are available to elected officials and staff from League member municipalities who have set up an account on the League’s website.

Additional Research & Surveys

The League also semi-regularly conducts additional surveys and compiles other data to provide insight on the operations of North Carolina’s municipalities.
