Municipal Members

Nearly every municipality in North Carolina is a member of the N.C. League of Municipalities. That level of membership is a recognition that NCLM is a one-stop shop for all things municipal government, offering services and advocacy that allow cities and towns to save money, more effectively and efficiently serve their residents, add to their community's quality of life, and maintain the local decision-making authority that allows them to pursue the unique visions of local residents. The League is truly a member-driven organization. Our advocacy goals are voted on by our members; locally elected council members are heavily involved in advocacy efforts and service initiatives; the organization and all of its initiatives are overseen by an active, 35-member Board of Directors that includes elected and appointed local officials from municipalities of all sizes.

For more than 100 years, North Carolina's cities and towns have joined together in this association to represent their collective interests, always striving to protect local authority so that cities and towns can be the best that they can be. If you have questions about League membership, please reach out.

Associate Members

Associate members are any other unit of local government, public authority, or special district that has a direct and significant link to a municipality or has authorized municipal function.

We also include the following among the League's membership:

  • Individual Members: Former municipal elected or appointed officials who meet conditions set by the NCLM board of Directors.
  • Honorary Members: Individuals who have rendered distinguished service to the cause of local government in North Carolina.
  • Affiliate Organizations: Groups whose members are mostly municipal officials, usually professional organizations.
